Squeaks

Silencing your floor

Squeaks are a common development in wood floors caused by the shrinking and expanding of the wood due to humidity. The squeak is caused by boards rubbing together. You can:

1) Try lubricating the squeak between the rubbing boards with talcum powder, liquid wax, powdered graphite, or powdered soap. This fix will generally be temporary.

2) The more permanent solution is to nail the boards at the area of the squeak. This process should be done by an expert. (If you are a handyman, use 2-inch finishing nails through pilot holes at the edges of the boards, then fill and refinish.)
